Common Pet Behavior Problems (and How to Actually Fix Them)
Every pet parent dreams of a well-behaved, happy companion, but let’s be real—sometimes our furry (or feathered) friends have other plans!
I remember when my dog would bark at literally everything—a leaf blowing, a doorbell on TV, even his own reflection.
Sound familiar?
The good news? Most pet behavior issues have straightforward solutions!
Here’s how to tackle some of the most common ones:
Excessive Barking – When Every Leaf Is a Threat
What’s the deal?
Dogs bark for a million reasons—boredom, anxiety, territorial instincts, or just to get your attention.
My trick? Mental workouts! A tired dog is a quiet dog.
Fix it:
- Give your dog more physical AND mental exercise (think puzzle toys!)
- Train the “quiet” command with positive reinforcement
- Drown out distractions with white noise or calming music
Destructive Chewing – RIP to My Favorite Shoes
My shoes are important, but my puppy once chewed through my laptop cord (RIP, charger).
Dogs chew out of stress, boredom, or teething.
Fix it:
- Rotate chew toys so they stay interesting
- Use bitter spray on furniture (dogs HATE the taste!)
- Try crate training for when you’re out
Leash Pulling – Who’s Walking Who?

Ever feel like your dog is walking you?
Been there.
Most dogs pull from excitement or a lack of leash training.
Fix it:
- Use a front-clip harness for better control
- Practice loose-leash walking with treats & praise
- Stop walking when they pull—reward calm behavior
Cat Behavior Problems & How to Solve Them
Even the most lovable felines can have some not-so-cute habits.
From midnight zoomies to scratching the furniture like it owes them money, cat behavior issues can leave you scratching your own head.
Scratching Furniture
Why it happens: Cats need to scratch. It helps them stretch, mark territory, and keep their claws healthy.
Solution:
- Give them better options. Place sturdy scratching posts near their favorite “crime scenes” (aka the couch corner).
- Use catnip or feline pheromone sprays to make the post irresistible.
- Cover furniture with double-sided tape or plastic guards as a deterrent.
Aggression Toward Humans or Other Pets
Why it happens: Could be fear, overstimulation, or redirected aggression (they see a bird outside and take it out on you).
Solution:
- Avoid rough play with hands—use toys instead.
- Learn their signals. Flattened ears, tail lashing, and dilated pupils mean “Back off!”
- Give them space and create vertical territory with cat trees or shelves.
Meowing Excessively
Why it happens: Some cats are just chatty, but it can also signal boredom, hunger, or health problems.
Solution:
- Feed and play on a schedule so they know what to expect.
- Interactive toys or puzzle feeders can keep them mentally stimulated.
- Check for signs of discomfort if the meowing seems unusual.
Nocturnal Mayhem
Why it happens: Cats are naturally crepuscular (active at dawn/dusk), but if they’re knocking over lamps at 3 a.m., you’ve got a night owl problem.
Solution:
- Play with your cat before bed to burn off energy.
- Feed a small meal at night—a full belly can promote sleep.
- Ignore attention-seeking behavior (hard, we know) to avoid reinforcing it.
Cats aren’t being “bad”—they’re just being cats. The key is to understand the why behind the behavior and give them a better outlet. With a little patience and consistency, even the sassiest feline can learn to chill.
Litter Box Problems – The Royalty Has Standards
Cats are picky. If the litter box isn’t up to their royal standards, they’ll protest.
Fix it:
– Scoop daily (your cat has high cleanliness standards!)
– Use unscented litter—some cats hate perfume
– Ensure there’s a litter box per cat, plus one extra
Pro Tip: Prevention is KEY!
– Train early—the younger, the better!
– Stick to positive reinforcement (no punishment!)
– Stay consistent—mixed signals = confused pets
